Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Fireman (ASLEF) The Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen was founded in the city of Sheffield in 1880 and flourished over the years as the principal union for railway drivers. British Medical Association (BMA) The British Medical Association is a professional association of doctors, representing their interests and providing services for its 122,000 plus members. This includes almost 4,000 from overseas and 11,500 who are medical students. More than 80% of British doctors are members.
Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union (BECTU) BECTU is the independent trade (labour) union for those working in broadcasting, film, theatre, entertainment, leisure and allied industries who are primarily based in the United Kingdom. The union represents permanently employed, contract and freelance workers within these industries.
The Centre for Trade Union Studies The Centre offers higher education courses especially designed for trade unionists and short courses for individual unions.
Communication Workers Union (CWU) The Communication Workers Union is a merger of the Union of Communication Workers and the National Communications Union. It brings together almost 300,000 workers in the postal, telecommunications, financial services and wider communicationsindustries. The CWU is the sixth largest union in Britain and the second largest communications union in Europe.

Federation of Communication Services (FCS) The Federation of Communication Services (FCS) is the representative body for the UK mobile communications industry and provides a central focus for developments, issues and legislation affecting all aspects of telecommunications. A strong trade association is the stable force at the heart of a competitive and liberalised industry.
The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) The Immediate aims of the Fire Brigades Union are to serve its members by winning for them the best possible conditions and to serve the community by encouraging its members to be skilled at their craft.
General Federation of Trade Unions (GFTU) The General Federation of Trade Unions was established at a special Congress of the TUC held in 1899. The principal objective was to set up a national organisation with a strike fund which could be drawn upon by affiliated trade unions. The GFTU is now geared to servicing the needs of specialist unions. It has built up years of experience of dealing with the needs of specialist unions. The total membership of specialist Unions affiliated to the Federation as at January 1999 was approximately 252,000. There are a total of 34 affiliated unions.
GMB Britain's General Union The GMB is a general union of over 700,000 people of whom nearly 40% are women.The three capital letters GMB is the registered name of the union. The union today is the sum of a number of mergers of longstanding trades unions covering several production and service sectors and trades. That is why the Union's name is now just the letters "GMB" and is referred to as "Britain's General Union".
Graphical, Paper and Media Union (GPMU) The Graphical, Paper & Media Union is the world's largest media trade union, and has a membership of over 200,000 working in the print, publishing, paper and media industries in both the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) The ICE is a UK-based international organisation with over 75,000 members ranging from professional civil engineers to students, a fifth of whom live outside the UK in some 140 countries. It is an educational and qualifying body and has charitable status under UK law.
Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers UK & ROI Section (IEEE) The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world's largest technical professional society. Founded in 1884 by
a handful of practitioners of the new electrical engineering discipline, today's Institute is comprised of more than 335,000 members who conduct and participate in its activities in nearly 150 countries. The men and women of the IEEE are the technical and scientific professionals making the revolutionary engineering advances which are reshaping our world today.
Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) The Institution of Electrical Engineers represents the public, professional and educational interest of over 140,000 electrical, electronic and manufacturing engineers world-wide. Key activities include publishing, the organisation of conferences, the maintenance of technical standards, interaction with government departments and the provision of scientific and technical information services.
National Union of Knitwear, Footwear and Apparel Trades (KFAT) KFAT is the knitwear, footwear and textile workers union. They represent 35,000 UK workers in the manufacture of hosiery, knitwear, lace, textiles, footwear, leather, leather products, and related trades such as factory shops and warehousing. Around 54% of our members are women.
Labour Research Department (LRD) The Labour Research Department (LRD) is the independent, trade union based research organisation. LRD's publications Labour Research, Bargaining Report, Fact Service and LRD Booklets, along with its unique Enquiry Service provide a wealth of detailed information for supporting negotiations and campaigns.
Labour Telematics Centre The Labour Telematics Centre (LTC) was established in January 1993 to support and encourage trade unions and labour movement organisations in gaining access to, and benefits from, computer based electronic communications and information technology - telematics. The LTC is also concerned with the impact of new information and communications technologies (ICT) on the labour process, conditions of employment and the nature of work itself. We work with a number of organisations on information society issues: deregulation of the telecoms market, telework, intellectual property rights, privacy and censorship, access, and the defence of standards of quality and public service in information content provision.

Public Services International Research Unit (PSIRU) The Public Services International Research Unit is a resource for, and financed by, the international trade union movement. Its main focus is the provision of information on multinational companies involved in privatisation. Company information is based on the PSIRU/PSI database with files on over 2,000 companies. The Unit also carries out research work in policy areas relevant to the public sector and privatisation and produces education and training materials for trade union activists.
Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors The RICS is one of the largest professional associations in the world, with a membership of some 100,000 comprising 75,000 chartered surveyors and 5,000 technical surveyors as
well as 20,000 students and probationers. Members are based in over 100 countries and operated in many others. In as many as 50 countries, the interests of chartered
surveyors are represented through locally organised units that provide support to members and promote the qualification to government and business.
Royal College of Nursing (RCN) The RCN is the world's largest professional union of nurses, with more than 300, 000 members. It's run by nurses for nurses, is the fastest growing trade union in the UK, is the second largest outside the Trades Union Congress and one of only four trade union in the country with a woman as General Secretary. The RCN is a major contributor to the development of nursing practice and standards of care, is a provider of higher education through the RCN Institute and is a registered charity.

TUC Library Collection The Library holds material collected by the TUC up to the end of 1993, although later material will continue to be deposited on an annual basis. In a few select areas, eg TUC and British trade union publications, current material will be added regularly to the Collection, in accordance with the collection management policy. The core areas of the collection are reference and historical works on the trade union movement, union publications from the UK and overseas, documents relating to working conditions and industrial relations in various industries, and material collected from the wide-ranging campaigns and policy areas in which the TUC has been involved since its foundation in 1868.
Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) The Transport and General Union was founded in 1922 when fourteen trade unions came together to form 'one big union' to serve workers in the docks, road transport and inland waterways industries. The union was founded with six trade groups, each covering a distinct industry. Around half the membership was in transport. Today there are fourteen trade groups, with under a third of the membership involved in transport.
Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) TSSA is an independent, UK-based trade union for the transport and travel trade industries. They have over 30,000 members working for the railways and associated companies, in the travel trade and in shipping, ports and buses in the UK and Ireland.
UNIFI UNIFI is one of the largest white collar unions in Britain and the largest specialist finance sector union in the world. It's also the newest - born on 18th May 1999 out of the 3-way merger of finance union BIFU, NatWest Staff Association NWSA and Barclays' union UNIFI. UNIFI represents almost 200,000 employees of banks, building societies, finance houses and insurance companies.
Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT) Britain's construction workers union with over 110,000 members employed in all the building occupations, both in the private and public sectors. The union organises workers in both the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, and has an extensive network of regional offices. Affiliated to the British Trades Union Congress and the Labour Party, and historically have been at the forefront of campaigns for rights at work and better health and safety.
UNISON UNISON is Britain's biggest and brightest trade union with over 1.3 million members. UNISON members are people working in the public services, for private contractors providing public services and the essential utilities. They include manual and white collar staff working full or part time in local authorities, the NHS, colleges and schools, the electricity, gas and water industries, transport and the voluntary sector.
